Mum time series: Yoga to relax

So I’ve decided to dedicate some posts this year towards the activities that I enjoy that are just for me in a hope to inspire a few others to take that time for yourself. It is so easy to get caught up in life and doing things for your family as a parent, but where is the time to reward yourself?

I used to do a lot of yoga and I had actually forgotten how relaxing and regenerating it can be. I think as a busy mum you automatically think you don’t have the time, but if there is one gym session I will make time for every week it’s my yoga class.

I always come away feeling refreshed and relaxed. It’s a me time activity. It’s a relaxing activity. It’s space.

Most yoga classes will start and finish with a bit of reflection and meditation and this is my favorite part. The time in the class where you can lie still and just breathe. No thoughts have to be dealt with. No-one can interrupt you. It’s serene and magical, just you and your breath.

Next comes the movement which can challenge your body and stretch you in ways you didn’t know you could be stretched. I’m quite supple but my strength is not as it used to be, however now I’m getting back into it I’m impressed with how much it is already improving.

There are a number of different practices of yoga and some people have a style that they really like the most. I’m quite flexible though, I’ve really been enjoying these seasonal workshops in Prahran that tend to give you a bit of a boost and kick start for the next season. They are quite spiritual and involve a lot of chanting and reflection. I’m not one who would enjoy this type of practice every week, but every three months it’s a really nice activity to do.

In between those sessions I’ve just been going to the yoga class at my local gym and it’s been great. The timing works well as its after Miss M goes to sleep but not too late so I still feel I get an evening.

If you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed and just too darn busy as a mum, I would wholeheartedly recommend giving a local yoga class a go. It’s just one hour out of your week but the opportunity to really and truly relax – something I just do not do in and around the house.

Have you been to yoga? What else do you find is a great way to relax?

  1. Oooh love the idea behind your series! Spotted it on your Facebook updates and was a stalker no pun intended. Now I’ve moved to commenter :) I wished like nothing on earth I loved yoga but no amount of downward dog can entice me. I’m happy with just a book for down time but pilates reformer helps me slow down and gives me that long needed me time :)

  2. Your amazing huny! And so right – the value in taking ‘me’ time is priceless. The more we can maintain ourselves as happy, healthy people, the better roles we can play for our family and friends! And out of all the people I teach, teaching busy mums is such a gift! They devote their lives to giving unconditionally to their children that to be able to nourish, support and help them to find their moment of peace is such an honour! And I guarantee that it enables to give even more to their families!
Great inspiration Mrs B! Keep up the fantastic work!
    Love always xxx
